Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an attempt to return to the traditional sextet style and it was a more consistent, more powerful album with a sharper edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing virtuosity was reflected by the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was sharper, more intricate and less cloying than earlier performances.
After touring to promote their album, the band recorded an Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The studio album came out a few months later, and the group went on a world-wide tour in support of it. During this period keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
